Chocolate Chip Cookie Crush

It's a cool rainy Sunday here in West Hollywood. I am sipping a hot coconut milk chai to the velvet croon of Chet Baker. And I am thinking about cookies. Not just any cookies. Gluten-free chocolate chip cookies. The best of the best. Sifting through my variations like a saxophone player in the groove of a beat. How do I like them best? That is the question. Because cookies will be baked today. And I've got a handful of chocolate chip cookie recipes to choose from. I've got choices.

Maybe I'll go with a classic style, bumpy with heavenly chunks of a vegan dark chocolate bar. Or the slightly chewy-crisp favorites made with gluten-free rolled oats from Bob's Red Mill. Wait. But then I remember my buckwheat flour chocolate chip cookies. Slightly sweet and verging on cakey. Perfect with a glass of cold vanilla rice milk. And then, to make matters even more complicated, I suddenly crave my quinoa flake cookie dough seductively studded with dark chocolate chips.

Decisions. Decisions.

As I've written before,

a good cookie is no small thing.

A good cookie can make you smile, even after a tiresome, irritating day.  Yes, I know it's food not love. But a cookie can be. Love I mean. A kind of culinary hug, when baked with affection.

A good cookie might even bring you a kiss. Or tender arms of appreciation wrapped around your neck. A good cookie might even make you a new friend. Or at the very least prove to the class that you're not a total, allergic celiac freak living on weirdo food that you have to feel sorry for and throw bread balls at.

A good cookie can make you feel like you belong.

First up- my favorite gluten-free chocolate chip cookie classic. The dough is loosely based on Alton Brown's recipe, but as many of you know, I'm not a huge fan of rice flour, so my recipe features sorghum flour and millet flour instead (and I don't use the butter, milk, and eggs he calls for). My cookies are vegan. And did I mention, oh so tasty? Here's my Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe with dark chocolate chunks.

In a chocolate chip cookie? Affirmative, my Sweet. Gluten-free buckwheat flour is a favorite g-free flour around here. And for those of you alarmed by the word wheat in buckwheat, wondering if it is, indeed, a gluten-free grain (with such a scary sounding name), rest assured. Buckwheat is actually more fruit than grain. It's a groat. And related to rhubarb, of all things. It's not a grass-grain. And lucky for vegans, buckwheat is higher in protein and fiber than typical gluten-free flours. Best of all? It has no metallic aftertaste like the high protein bean flours. Curious? Oatmeal with Chocolate, Please

I suppose you could argue that oatmeal cookies need raisins. Right? Raisins give cookies that sneaky old school nutrition boost. With a hint of cinnamon, the oatmeal-raisin combo is a beloved classic. But the simple truth is, after a bite or two I always wonder, where are the chocolate chips? So I bake my oatmeal cookies with bits of vegan dark chocolate. And Darling. These cookies are to die for. Here are my Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies.

Quinoa Chocolate Chip Cookies? Dude.

Don't tell the other cookie recipes above, but these are now my favorite gluten-free cookies. I mean it. These are unusually delicious, with a brown sugar caramel flavor and a chewy quinoa center accented with vegan chocolate chips. Cookie bliss. (I love the protein profile of quinoa flakes- a complete vegan protein, don't you?). This is the perfect choice for those craving oatmeal but avoiding oats. Okay. I might have to go with this recipe.   4. You and I are the same wave length talented lady. I have been craving chocolate chip cookies for a few weeks now and even made a foray into baking some just last week. They need a little work but they tasted like chocolate chip cookies. Really, there is no better cookie on the face of this earth. Yours look divine! (PS - I am going to go out and get some buckwheat flour.)

    Well I'm with you GFG, I love the quinoa choc chip cookies and what's more so do my 3 kids who aren't GF and who are quite 'discerning' when it comes to my GF baking......

  11. Your cookies look amazing! I tried a recipe this weekend from the Flying Apron cookie and they stunk! I followed the recipe exactly and they came out tasting like hard crunchy biscotti (which isn't a bad thing, but I wanted a cookie). Almost every GF, vegan cookie that I have tried has been a bust. There must be a secret I am missing. I am thinking that secret is in your recipes! :-) I am going to try one of your recipes soon!

Oh, so many fabulous chocolate chip cookie recipes ... this is how you show us you love us, isn't it? ;-) I can personally attest to how good your Buckwheat Chocolate Chip Cookies are. :-) Now I'm very intrigued by the quinoa version. They look dense and chewy and I love the added nutrition factor, as you pointed out, Karina. Some more baking to be done here at gfe!

    Coconut chai? Easy. One bag gluten-free chai spiced tea (I like Bengal Spice Tea by Celestial Seasonings) in half a mug of hot water. Add warm/hot So Delicious Coconut Milk (plain or vanilla) to the top. Steep. Add a dab of sweetener, if you like. So good!

    We're kindred spirits you and I Karina. Sunday i to craved choc chip cookies and went to the kitchen. i didn't want my fav buckwheat choc chip i din't want oatmeal choc chip (those are our standard favs) i wanted the old nestle off the package recipe. i've failed at GF baking so many times i was nervous. so nervous i put real eggs in my cookies (sorry) but what i got was yummy cookie of perfect taste and the dough was right for eating right out of the mixer. Yum.

    i used 1/4 coconut flour, 1/2 c sorghum flour, 1/2 c tapioca starch and 1/2 rice flour, 1/4 c buckwheat. hmmm..i'm unfortuantely forgetting. But i know the sideof the package called for 2 1/4 c flour and i only used 2 c as the coconut flour is so fiberous it often dries things out. I used 1/2 c spectrum shortning adn 1/2 c soy free/df marg. they were delicious and i'm going for one right now with coconut milk on the side. maybe even the chai.

  19. I am a college student and a fellow gluten-free girl and I don't often have the time or kitchen space to experiment with elaborate GF meals. Sometimes it's hard to even make it to Whole Foods down the street when I know that there is probably free pizza somewhere on campus... Yet these recipes are so simple that I am inspired to actually go out of my way to buy the ingredients and make a batch of chocolate chip cookies in my tiny kitchen! I only recently began adhering to the restrictions of my new diet but since I started following your blog you have given me hope that there are easy, healthy options out there for me. Thank you for the cookies- The oatmeal ones look delicious and I will add them to my growing box of g-free recipes. It's a small stack right now, but you have to start somewhere right?

When I make cookies, usually for my wee ones, I make them with love but no matter how much love you make them with if the recipe isn't good it isn't worth it. Cookies are an art here and with your recipes it's usually a winner. My little ones don't mind rice flour and usually that's what we make ours with but we are going to have to try these too.

  26. Oh my goodness. I can see why the quinoa flake cookie recipe is your new favorite. I didn’t have quinoa flour so I used millet, and I cut back on the sugar, but despite these two alterations the cookies were amazing—crunchy, tasty, and satisfyingly chocolatey. I also had reservations about using olive oil, but again, it was perfect. This will definitely go into the “bake and share” recipe file.

    As for chai- I just make chai with So Delicious coconut milk instead of milk. You can use your favorite chai and sweeten to taste. xox

  30. Thank you so much for these recipes! I recently discovered that my chronic pain was being caused by several food sensitivities I didn't know I had, and you guessed it, gluten was one of the culprits!

    I've been having an awful time trying to get my recipes to turn out with a wonderful texture and will give your Quinoa cookies a try. I am sure they will lift my spirits and make things better!
