As the first decade of the new millennium chugs to a long slow finish like the spunky little engine that could, top ten lists are sprouting up everywhere. Top ten movies, top ten playlists. Which begs the burning question for celiac survivors. Hello! Where is our own gluten-free top ten list? Where is our shining and sparkly Top Ten Gluten-Free Goodness? It's a new year. A spanking new decade. Let's party.

So without further ado, here is my own humble contribution to the Best of the Best in the expanding gluten-free recipe universe.


Whittling down unruly bundles of favorite recipes into a neat and tidy top ten list wasn't easy, Babycakes. It kept me up last night. I tossed and turned. I imagined my first gluten-free apple crisp, my brown sugar turkey meatloaf, my vegetarian mulligatawny. My multiple mac and cheese recipes (in my defense, some are vegan, some are not, so who am I to judge which version is superior?). I have more than one favorite bread recipe (I rotate regularly to keep my taste buds happy). And then there are cupcakes, and quinoa, and risotto. And muffins!

So I turned to you for help.

I tallied up your comments, your searches and recipe views. I factored in your enthusiasm and your e-mails. I tossed all of the above into the virtual blender that is my brain at 2 AM and I hit Whip. And the following list is what poured out in one smooth and creamy inspiration. Here's what you asked for. Here's what you loved. And best of all, here's what made someone you love smile.

  3. Oh, Karina, you have no idea what a godsend you have been to me and my son. At age 15, he was diagnosed w/ Type 1 diabetes. Now, it seems he is diagnosed w/ Celiac disease as well. One thing I love to do for my son and family is cook wonderful meals for all to enjoy. Your website has given me hope as we now adjust to gluten-free living. I don't know if you will see this comment, but the one and only thing that could make those of us who deal w/ Type 1 and Celiac would be nutritional analysis that indicates the amount of carbs. I know this is a stretch for you and alot of extra work, but it could help those w/ these combos a great deal.
    Still, I LOVE your site and look forward to all of your successes!!! Thank you so much.

  10. Thank you for a great Top Ten List. I have tried the majority of the recipes and would agree. I really love the Quinoa Breakfast Brownies and the Dark Chocolate Brownies.
    I made the Dark Chocolate Brownies before the holidays and everyone, and I mean everyone, loved them.
    But I have one question - exactly what chocolate from Trader Joes do you use? I had used the last of my no-soy GFCF unsweetened chocolate from Traders Joes, so I went to buy more and was told they are no longer carrying it. They also said it was not just at my local store, but that corporate was not carrying it anymore. If there is another no-soy GFCF chocolate at Trader Joe's please let me know. I have to tell you I almost cried when they told me they were no longer carrying the chocolate.

    This is my first comment, but I've been lurking for awhile. On the eve of a new year, I had to tell you how MUCH your blog brings to my family.

    Six months ago our 7 yr old son was diagnosed with autism, and we decided to alter his diet shortly after. As a woman who was literally raised in a bakery (my parents owned a small bakery in an "artist's town" on the Gulf Coast before Hurricane Katrina knocked it down), the idea of having to go gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, etc. was pretty darn scary. But I rolled up my sleeves, determined to do whatever I needed for our son.

    The good news was that GFCFSF *worked* for him- his autism symptoms decreased by almost 80%. The bad news- he was bravely trying to pretend my clunky, grainy cookies and brownies tasted good. After crying over multiple baking failures, and the prospect of never getting to feed my kid a birthday cake he would enjoy, I found your blog.

    I simply can't express how much of a godsend it has been. Even before I tried the first recipe, I somehow KNEW- "this is it. She *gets* food. If anyone can figure out how to make gluten-free taste good, she can."

    Not a single recipe has let me down. And neither have you. Because on the days when I am tired of doing physical therapy, vitamin supplements and homeschooling for my little guy, your wit and wisdom and positive outlook give me the boost I need. I take a breath, kiss my son's blonde, happy head, and pull out my baking pans, knowing that there's little in the world that a good chocolate chip cookie can't cure- especially when you have a gluten-free angel on your shoulder.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you, Karina. You give more than you know with your blog. Bless you and your wonderful men- now and in the New Year!

  14. I agree - no carrot cake? But mostly I really miss the chocolate mint cookies! They should be #11. lol They are my go-to cookie. They work every time and hold up well with lour substitutions. EVERYONE loves them - gluten eaters or not!

    Love the new header! Beautiful photo! Also, love your site, come here (and comment, sometimes as embphotography when I forget to sign out first) often. When I am bored I read through you recipes. I love to read cook books, and your online "cookbook" with the mouth watering photo displays is right up my alley. You have made my journey with my very allergic toddler only to discover my own gluten intolerance much easier. Your recipes often fit right into his diet with little to no augmentations! I am really wanting to get into bread making but have had multiple failures with vegan gf recipes which can be so discouraging. I have really been wanting a bread machine like you use, but couldn't swing it. I just looked again a few days ago, still $129, well I just looked again this evening and it is onsale for $84! I am ordering mine first thing tomorrow. Just wanted to share that on here in case any one else would like one but really couldn't swing it!

    Hi Karina; I made a terrific dressing for the 3 women in my family who eat gluten free.Here's how I did it. I took 2 loaves of ener-g bread, cut them into cubes. Took 2 celery stocks and half a good sized onion and whizzed them fine in my food processor. Pulled the meat from the skin of a g.f. pork sauge, chopped a handful or so of plump dried apricots, and about a cup of dried cranberries. I browned the meat well, breaking it up as small as possible, removed the meat and added the celery and onion, some salt and pepper,and a good sprinkling of sage(a couple tablespoons). Next I trew in the bread cubes, stirred them to coat and then added enough g.f. chicken broth, enough to make it moist buy not soggy. cover the top of the bread well with dried sage, add the fruit and stir. Cook it covered on top of the stove for about half an hour. Add some turkey gravy when you get it and stir well before serving. I took the left overs to my sisters, in a casserole, covered with tin foil and just reheated it in the oven at her house. She is a caterer(as was our mom) and she asked for the recipe.That is high praise.And her daaughter took some home.

  27. Oh yes, those brownies...those AWFUL brownies (awful because I can eat a pan all by myself!). But, I also LOVE the vegetarian shepherd's pie. I don't make it spicy and it is still SO good!!!

    Oh my god, we made the dark chocolate brownies yesterday and four of us consumed almost the whole thing....
    I will be making this for a treat for another gluten free friend. We can't have dairy either so we subbed Spectrum shortening for the butter and couldn't tell the difference.
