A small gift for you this weekend. Some cool, frosty, non-dairy peachy goodness. A vegan ice cream recipe for the sticky dog days of late summer. Wait. Is it August already? Good goddess, the summer is careening by. It's true what they say about the concept of time. It speeds up and gets fluid as you get, um, shall we say, older. Seasoned.

One might even venture, weathered.

During your ritual morning walk your husband turns to you and mentions a moment from yesterday and the dirt path beneath you starts to swim (not that swimming surfaces are all that unusual out here in the shimmering southwest sun).

You ask, Wait. Was that yesterday? 

And he thinks a minute. Wait, he says. Friday? 

You hear the brittle dryness of the desert wind. The roar of the loud cobalt sky. There are red and sienna stones beneath your feet. The same stones as yesterday, last week, last year.

That was last week, you offer gently, shaking your head in a spin cycle of empathy and disbelief and astonishment. 

Dude, he says. Recalculating.

Tell me about it, you sigh.

Weeks morph into days.

How about some peach ice cream for breakfast?

Vegan peach ice cream - dairy-free and gluten-free
Cool, frosty, peachy dessert.

Vegan Peach Ice Cream- a dairy-free frozen dessert recipe

I prefer using coconut milk in my non-dairy ice cream recipes (rice or almond milk will not be quite as creamy). If you non-vegans can use dairy moo-cow milk, go right ahead. I'd use half milk and half cream. The higher the fat, the creamier the result. It's a treat after all.

You'll need:

About 4 cups of peaches, peeled and cut up into pieces and divided in half
1 14-oz can coconut milk
2 teaspoons organic virgin coconut oil (especially if the coconut milk is not full fat)
1/2 to 3/4 cup organic light brown sugar, to taste
1 teaspoon bourbon vanilla


In a saucepan heat half the peaches (2 cups) with the coconut milk, coconut oil, and sugar until the peaches are softened and the sugar is melted (this takes less than five minutes). Remove from heat and cool.

Pour the mixture into a blender and blend till smooth.

Combine the remaining peaches with the peach-coconut milk mixture. Add the vanilla. Stir and cover. Refrigerate for two hours or so- until the mixture is cold.

Churn the peach mixture in your favorite ice cream maker, as per manufacturer's instructions.

Or pour the mixture into a freezable container and freeze; check every 15 to 20 minutes or so and stir the mixture to keep ice crystals from forming.

Makes a quart of peachy vegan ice cream.

I recently figured out my Donvier ice cream freezer was cross contaminated. Duh! The blades are plastic and I clearly remember the fabulous Oreos & Cream ice cream I made in it before going gf. I bought it cheap years ago, and now the price is sky high.

I may try this recipe using the put-the-bowl-in-the-freezer method.

Karina - what does Hemp milk taste like? Is there another alternative milk that it resembles in taste? And do you think the recipe would work with agave syrup instead of sugar? Inquiring minds want to know:)

GF Ellen- It's a lot like nut milk, only a bit more creamy. I think agave or honey would work. It might change the end result texture a bit, of course; but I think it's definitely doable. Let me know what you try.

Monica- I went with one that is not too expensive- but not the cheapest, either. It works great. Cleans up fast. This is the ice cream maker I use. Amazon offers free shipping on it.

.maybe this is a silly question, but did you peel the peaches?

I don't have an ice cream maker, but will try the freezer method, maybe also employing FFVK Susan's technique for pineaplle sorbet, where you freeze the fruit, then let it set out ten minutes, then whip it up in the food processor. . it wouldn't be exactly the same as yours, but it might work if it gets too hard in the freezer. .

Let me know if the "freeze then process" technique works. I imagine it will be like more a granita or icy sorbet that way.

I can't tell you what a beauty and a joy this ice cream was to make, and to eat, right from slipping the skins off the seasonal fresh peaches. . .they were like little suns on fire. . .we had this out in the yard, sitting around a candlelit table as the stars came out on a summer night of the hottest day of the year, and it was magical. . . I can't report on using any alternate methods, though, because I ran into a friend at the farmer's market who insisted I borrow her ice cream maker. . .so what could I do but accept?!. . .and also make the banana lime ice scream as well while I had the chance!. . .mmm, mm, another ambrosial experience. I love the squeeze of lime. Just perfect. Thank you so much, for these delicious and beautiful recipes, that are healthy for me to eat on my diet for MS, and that also helped make my son's 23rd birthday supper fun and special for all of us.

Full fat coconut milk makes good ice cream, too, for those who can't use or find hemp milk. Some are stronger flavored than others, so you might have to experiment to find one you like. I make chocolate ice cream just by adding regular chocolate syrup to a can of the coconut milk and freezing in a bowl. When I scoop some out, I microwave it for a few seconds and stir, and it makes a nice soft serve.

As I just received a heartbreaking dear Jenny letter from my local icecream parlor (IE sorry to inform you that for reasons we won't be sharing, every single flavor is made with wheat - sucks to be you) this is going to be goddess sent. While I can still consume dairy, finding egg free (another dratted no-no) icecreams is harder than I thought it would be.

Tomorrow? My local farmer's market mailer informs me that they will have peaches in abundance. I think its time to chuck my icecream maker's core into the freezer and plan for a creamy treat come dinner time! Thanks so much.

I wonder if the recipe would work just as well with all the peaches left raw and creamily pureed, rather than cooking half first. If so, the ice scream would be a remarkably healthy treat with all those lovely anti-oxidants and other nutrients that cooking kills off.

Karina, you truly ARE a goddess! We just finished a peachy batch of this nectar, and it's the best "ice cream" I've ever had. It was nice to eat a dairy-free treat that the whole family savored (I'm the only dairy-free one, and 3 of the 4 of us are celiac). Thanks for the summer inspiration!

@ Monica, we have the Cuisinart® Ice Cream/Yogurt Maker (~$59), and it worked beautifully for this recipe. Its 1-1/2 quart capacity was maxed out, but it was a great excuse to spoon a bite or two off the top as it cooled.

Never made icecream before so don't have a machine...but I couldn't resist this!
However mine doesn't quite have the orange colour of yours; mine is more light golden, and tastes more tart than sweet. Peachy though! It's also a wee bit lumpy, (probably because of the required every fifteen minute stirs); couldn't quite get the smooth consistency of cream. But all in all it was easy enough to do and has certainly whetted my appetite to try it again! Maybe an icecream maker is in my future!

I didn't have peaches but we used blueberries and full fat coconut milk and it is divine!!

My Grandmother saw the unwashed pot and tried a bit because it looked good and she couldn't believe it was ice cream! Lol!

I tried this. I didn't add chunks of peaches because I like my "ice cream" smooth. It was great. One thing; I forgot to add the coconut oil, which is really unfortunate since I've been trying to find excuses to use it. Anyway, the result is delicious. Another small thing; it froze rock (ROCK) hard. LOL Thanks for this. I enjoy your blog.

I made this with mangoes instead of peaches (more mangoes around than peaches in Australia at the moment) and MY GOODNESS!!! My mother and son are both dairy free and I am their new favourite person!! Admittedly this was more like a sorbet as I don't have an ice cream maker, but the flavour was fantastic. I'm going to cheat on your recipe. I just put dark agave with coconut water and flesh with fresh peaches straight into the blender. Had not considered adding coconut milk but might try that as I have raw coconut cream in the cupboard. Love your pics. Looks delish!

I'm so confused. I was looking for a hemp milk recipe. All the links praise you for your use of hemp milk but the recipe says coconut. Can I sub out the coconut for hemp? Was there an earlier version of the recipe?

Shane- Yes, I've tried this with vanilla hemp milk, coconut milk, and nut milk. It's all good (though truth be told, my favorite version is coconut milk).
