Pomegranate Smoothie - Dairy-Free

Gluten-free vegan pomegranate smoothie
Pomegranate smoothie- dairy-free bliss.

I'm delirious. I could blame it on the wind. There is a loco spring wind here in New Mexico, you know. And it can make you, well. Crazy. It rough rides up the Chama River like nobody's business and bitch slaps the mesa behind us. It buffets the casita absolutely senseless and whips tumbleweeds into missiles. I'm not kidding. There are moments when you wonder if the roof will lift off.

You start looking out the window for flying monkeys

So you hunker down and pull out pots and pans to conjure mashed potatoes into colcannon just to cope. You bake comforting Roasted Vegetable Lasagna. You feel like whipping up your own brand of frenzy.

In the gentle guise of a vegan smoothie.

Because you crave pomegranate. We all know deep and vibrant hued fruits are good for us. You've read about all those studies, right? How all those yummy antioxidants and goodies like anthocyanin feed our brains and keep us sharp, on the edge, where we need to be?

Psychology Today reports that preliminary results indicate that people who eat a cup of blueberries a day perform 5 percent to 6 percent better than a control group on tests of motor skills. I'm not good at math (will blueberries help?) so I'm unsure if "5 to 6 percent better" is a huge deal, but. Hey.

For the sake of my asymmetrical motor skills (I was the geek who was never- ever- picked for any team in school) I'm willing to eat a few more blueberries, pomegranates and cranberries. Not because I harbor hopes of better motor skills.

But because they taste so good.

Pomegranate Smoothie - A dairy-free vegan recipe

This gorgeous-hued treat is more like a slushy than a creamy smoothie- though with more hemp or nut milk it could be nudged into said category. Play with it and see how you like it. I'm thinking of making this some warm and windy evening- and adding a shot of Chopin vodka to it. Or tequila. Hello.

For a single smoothie:

1/2 cup organic frozen peach slices
1/2 cup organic frozen wild blueberries
1/2 cup organic unsweetened pomegranate juice
1 tablespoon agave nectar
1/2 cup vanilla soy, hemp milk or non-dairy milk of choice

Toss the frozen fruit into a sturdy blender; add the pomegranate juice and agave. Cover and blend on high. It will be thick. Add the vanilla hemp milk. Blend. Add more liquid if you need it.

I served it slushy and thick and, Oh my- it was smoothalicious. Can you see me smiling?

  1. Awesome pic! Looks delicious. Pomegranate also makes a helluva mixer for a nice cocktail (and will now forever be associated with Al Pacino in my mind...)

  2. That looks amazing!

  3. I like the theory that drinking several of these could improve my motor skills. Excellent.

  4. Oh yes!!

You are quickly becoming one of my favorite reads - not only for the tantalizing recipes you post, but for the delicious way you write about your experiences!

I adore pomegranite. I also adore this recipe, try it next time with Acai Palm berries. You can get frozen bags of them at Whole Foods or similar stores. They have even more antioxidant power and a lovely berry bite with a smooth chocolate finish.

  6. the color is amazing! bet the taste was, too.

Somehow, the idea of making this smoothie was all I could think about during my yoga practice this morning and so.. finally, here I am, drinking it up right now, and I must say... YUMMMYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. I made moose meatballs once and they were delicious!

  9. wow I haven't checked in on your recipes for a while, this looks yum! Vanilla hemp milk sounds interesting...

  10. Looks wonderful. I think this is going to hit the breakfast table in the morning (with the substitution of soy milk. Hey, its what I got.) and I'm already looking forward to it.

As to the more adult version?

Gonna say, I have a bottle of lemon rum and all the ingredients (again, minus the hemp milk) and as today has been a long rough one I think I know how the hubby and I are going to end the evening.

  11. The color of this is so spectacular. I can't wait to try this one out. Pomegranate juice rocks !

  12. Muchas gracias, Amigos and Amigas. xox
