Here's a quick and simple cranberry infused recipe for breakfast that is refreshing, tart and food allergy friendly (around our humble casita, anyway). It's dairy-free, soy-free, egg, corn and nut free. And naturally, it's you-know-what free. Spring is around the corner, Babycakes.

Are you ready? Are you feeling a little bloated and pasty? Do you crave something light and refreshing?

Something to wake up your winter saturated taste buds?

I knew it. Pucker up.

Cranberry-Banana Smoothie - A Dairy-Free Recipe

You don't have to be a vegan to appreciate this quick and easy breakfast. Cranberries make it tart- so please taste test and adjust the sweetness to your liking.

Ingredients: 

1/2 cup frozen organic cranberries
1 small ripe banana, peeled, sliced (frozen bananas rock)
1 cup cold non-dairy milk
A splash of cranberry juice
1 tablespoon raw agave nectar, to taste
1-2 tablespoons vanilla rice protein powder, to taste

Instructions: 

Combine the ingredients in a blender, cover and blend on a lower speed to process the cranberries. Add an ice cube or two if you like it super cold.

Rev it up to high till smooth and frothy.

Grab a straw.

Sip.

Feel the cranberry love.

Serves 1.

  1. Cranberry & banana... I've never thought of that combination. I'll have to try it, once my 15 lb. bag of grapefruit is used up. I'm currently on a grapefruit-strawberry kick.

    Hi Karina, I love smoothies for breakfast (or lunch, or afternoon snack, or dinner) as well! It's one of my definite downfalls in terms of eating seasonally/locally. I'll buy frozen fruit year-round to keep myself in smoothies.

    Oh, my goodness, what PERFECT timing!!! I'm getting my tonsils out next week...my doctor suggested "bulking up" now as I'm not going to be able to/want to eat too much post-surgery, but this may be an ideal post-surgery item! I mean, it's cold, and there's some protein in there--a GREAT combination! Seriously, your ears must have been ringing because I was looking around for some good cold and/or soup recipes, and you posted about this fabulous-looking smoothie! THANKS!!! :D

Just wanted to say "thanks" for all the great recipes, photos and stories - this site always cheers me up. I don't have any food allergies, but I like to eat organic, natural, good-for-you foods and experiment with new ways of doing things. This sun-loving earth mama has been feeling very winter-worn lately, though. So I just bought myself a giant bag of absolutely georgeous ruby-red organic cranberries.     Wondering about that protein powder. I had gum surgery a few days ago and am struggling with getting enough protein. Before I commit to an entire container of the one you used, can you tell me about it? I've had issues in the past with protein powders - somehow, I've always thought you could taste them because of their grittiness, or they were chalky. What's your take on the one you're using? Would love your thoughts.

    Hi Ellen! Sorry to hear about the gum surgery- ouch! As for the protein powder- well. It's a protein powder. You know it's in there. But I'd say it's the best I've found. I got used to the texture/taste.

  12. If you like them cold, I started doing this:

    When my bananas start to get too ripe to eat, I peel them, cut them in half and place them in a freezer container.

    Cutting the bananas in half makes them the perfect size for the Magic Bullet mugs, and I don't 'water' down my smoothie with ice! Plus, no more wasted, brown bananas to toss in the trash :)

  13. I'm addicted to this cranberry bliss. And I'm supposed to rotate my foods because of food intolerances (so I don't create any new ones). This recipe is making it hard, because I could eat it every day!!! I count the days...

    Karina, thank you for once again taking me out of my box. I would never (I mean never) have tried using cranberries. And, naturally, like all of your recipes, it is delicious.

    Incidentally, for the first few days I could not find frozen organic cranberries, so I tried it using frozen organic cherries (leaving out the agave nectar). That was also amazing.

    By the way, for anyone out there who does not own a Vitamix (like Susan) I recommend doing what ever you have to do to get one. I have had one for a number of years, and I use it several times a day. It is one of the best investments I have ever made. That baby can pretty much blend anything you throw its way.

    Thank you for the inspiration. I had a few spoonfuls of tart cranberry orange chutney so I used that, some frozen banana chunks, unsweetened cranberry juice, apple juice, and a bit of agave. What an excellent smoothie!! Thanks!
