Santa Fe Style



Walking after dinner is a pleasure here in Santa Fe. The light is magic. The adobe walls throb with the heat of the day [you cannot resist raising your palms to it]. Solar power.

In less than two weeks we'll be moving north. Out of the city. Into the country. A place - once a pueblo- called Abiquiu. A tiny village. We'll have llamas and horses for neighbors. And two sour cherry trees and an apple tree to frame our view of the distant bluish hills beyond the Chama River. I'm itching to be there now. To breathe the sense of peace I feel when I turn down the county road and drive along the bosque, green with old cottonwoods.

We've picked out a carved Mexican bed two roperos (there are no closets!), and a couple of tables - a kitchen table carved from New Mexican juniper, and a beat up old wooden table with worn blue paint, perfect for a desk Two generous leather chairs. Some pottery made by local hands. A few mismatched dishes in violet, deep red, green and turquoise. Mexican glasses in various shades of green, blue and teal. 

I still can't decide on a KitchenAid color [or if I'll even need a standing mixer here at high altitude - baking here will prove a double challenge - gluten-free + high altitude = potential for baking disasters].

Any tips on baking gluten-free in the high desert are welcome.

  3. What a great photo...and I love the description of the magic light. Your simple, lovely new life sounds peaceful and calm and full of vibrant colors. Who needs to bake when you can eat guacamole all day? But, if you do decide you need a mixer, I like the orange one :)

  5. I'm in Colorado so high-altitude baking is a way of life for me. I usually decrease the leavening and the sugar a bit. Sometimes I add a couple of extra tablespoons of flour. And increasing the oven temperature while decreasing baking time helps too. You get used to the changes and I'm sure you're baking will be as good as ever!

  7. Gorgeous descriptions, and I love the picture! I love this living vicariously through this adventure of yours - the thought of your beautiful new furniture (and I'm not sure why, but especially your worn table with blue paint!) and the warm, embracing weather. I'm originally from the desert in Colorado, and "from our kitchen" has great advice - you'll learn quickly what works and what doesn't - and I'm sure anything that comes from your kitchen will be fabulous!

  9. I am going to LOVE visiting your blog. We have a tiny piece of land outside Tres Piedras...haven't seen it in person yet. LOVE that area. (My mother lived briefly in Santa Fe.)

  10. Abiquiu is in a gorgeous area - I went to a knitting retreat there a few years ago. I'll be traveling through Taos/Sante Fe/Albuquerque in a few weeks ago and am looking forward to the amazing light.
